Part of Malcolm disappearing at smoothing levels 1 and 2

As the title states, when I smooth malcolm I'm losing his torso, arms, and one eye. I've used malcolm before and there's been no problem, so I'm not sure what's happening here. He is scaled down a great deal, maybe that's affecting it?
