I see there is a pay version of the abx picker for maya 2012. 20 $ - no more free versions

I had the same issue in 2011. Changing the path in the attributes section to the full path fixed it.
for example - I changed the path for BG Image from
"images/MalcolmPicker.bmp"
to
"K:/xyz/abc/myproject/images/MalcolmPicker.bmp"
And it worked for me.
